It took a little while to get started Sunday morning after a two-hour fog delay, but once on the golf course mini-tour professional Kam Williams of Hoschton heated up quickly to take home the crown at the 72nd Golf Pro Payments Georgia Open after a 6-under par 66 in the final round. Williams finished at 17-under par 271 for the championship and took home the $9,000 first-place check.
Williams started the day one-shot behind third round leader, PGA Professional Greg Edwards of Gainesville, but quickly took the lead after birdies on the third and fifth holes. He extended his lead after birdies on eight and nine to make the turn three ahead of Edwards and the tournament quickly became a two-horse race. Edwards birdied the 10th, 11th and 14th to get within one shot. Williams was able to birdie the 15th while Edwards made a bogey making the lead three heading into the final stretch. Williams was able to cruise to the victory on the final two holes and win his first Georgia Open by two shots in front of a great crowd at The Ford Field and River Club.
Alone in third was the low amateur Aidan Kramer of Atlanta finishing seven shots back at 10-under par 278. Rounding out the top five was the amateur duo of Brett Barron of Suwanee and Harry Jones of Augusta at 9-under par 279.
The father-son duo of Paul and Parker Claxton both finished in the top-20. Parker finished tied for eighth at 7-under par and got the best of his father and 2017 Georgia Open Champion Paul by four shots. They enjoyed playing together in the first two rounds of the tournament. Defending champion and first round leader Austin Morrison of St. Simons Island completed the championship in a tie for eighth at 7-under par 281.
