Mother Nature was kind to the National Car Rental Georgia PGA Assistant’s Championship at Peachtree Golf Club. This 36-hole Championship crowned, three alternates and three qualifiers that will move on to the National Assistant PGA Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, FL in November.
Round 1 was led by Francisco Bide of Flat Creek Club as he carded a five under, 67. He was followed by four 68’s, including the eventual Champion, Greg Edwards of East Lake Golf Club.
After coming in for some lunch and a quick re-pair, the 60 player field was sent back out to compete for Round 2 of the Championship. Two players surged to the top as J.P. Griffin of Capital City Club, fired a 64 and Chad Thomas of West Pines Golf Club, came in with a 65 to be in contention. In the end, it was Edwards birdie putt on hole 18 of his second round that sealed it with a 66 to win by one. Bide came in with a 68 to secure his spot along with Griffin as qualifiers for the National Championship.
We had a two-hole playoff to determine 1st and 2nd alternates and Thomas defeated Robby Bruns of Augusta National to earn that top spot. Rounding out the 3rd alternate spot is Alastair Tidcombe of Frederica Golf Club.
