78th Georgia PGA Championship
Sea Island Golf Club - Seaside | August 25-27, 2025

Georgia PGA Championship History

The Georgia PGA Championship was first contested in 1948 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, home of Bobby Jones. At the time, Georgia was a Chapter of the Southeast Section of the PGA of America (1948–1958). Despite not yet being a stand-alone Section, the event quickly became the premier competition for Georgia professionals.

From 1953 through 1957, the Championship was played in a match-play format, marking a unique era before returning to stroke play, which has since defined the tournament.

Between 1959 and 1964, Georgia operated as a Chapter of the Georgia–Alabama Section. In 1965, that Section was renamed the Dixie Section, with Georgia remaining a Chapter until December 1969, when the Georgia Section was officially established. From that point forward, the Georgia PGA Championship became the flagship event of the new Section.

Throughout its history, the Championship has been closely tied to Sea Island Golf Club, which has hosted the event all but 23 times since its inception. The resort’s enduring relationship with the tournament has made it the spiritual home of the Georgia PGA Championship, while other venues across the state have added variety and tradition to its history.

Today, the Championship not only crowns Georgia’s top PGA Professional each year but also serves as a qualifying event for the PGA Professional Championship, where players can advance to the PGA Championship against the game’s elite.

For more than 75 years, the Georgia PGA Championship has symbolized excellence, tradition, and the lasting contributions of PGA Professionals who grow and represent the game across the state.
