The Standard Club | June 10-11, 2024

Atlanta Open History

The Atlanta Open is one of the oldest Professional/Amateur events in Georgia with the inaugural tournament dating back all the way to 1932. East Lake Country Club was the first site to host the championship on May 27, 1932 and it was ran by the Atlanta Golf Association (AGA) which was established in August of 1931. Along with the Atlanta Open, the AGA sponsored the Atlanta City Amateur, Atlanta Senior Amateur, and a Junior Championship. The Atlanta Open has been held every year except 1943-1945 because of World War II.

The AGA ran the coveted City Championship until 1951 where for a short stint was governed by state PGA Officials and the Georgia State Golf Association until the AGA resumed sponsorship of the tournament in 1954. They continued the championship until the Georgia Section, PGA of America took over fully in 1981. Under the new leadership, the Atlanta Open had it’s first title sponsor, Maxell in 1985 & 1986. In 1987, Bridgestone came in and held the title until 1997 when the current title sponsor Yamaha replaced them.

Since it’s inception in 1932, there have been: seven champions to win back to back (Tommy Barnes (a) 1937-1938; Gene Dahlbender Jr. (a) 1958-1959; Wayne Yates, PGA 1973-1974; Terry Anton 1979-1980; Jon Hough 1987 (a)-1988; Matt Russell 1996-1997; Sonny Skinner, PGA 2015-2016), 30 PGA Member champions, 23 amateur champions, and 13 Georgia Golf Hall of Famers.
