PGA Associate Chris Nicol of The Kingdom at Reynolds Lake Oconee ran away with the victory at the Assistants’ Championship at Peachtree Golf Club on Monday, August 14. This one day, 36-hole Championship saw blistering temperatures as the heat index was well into the 100’s. This makes Nicol’s rounds of 66-67, 11-under par, that more impressive. Runner-up in the Championship was Assistant Golf Professional at Doublegate Country Club in Albany, Paxton Shuman at 6-under par.

This Championship also serves as a qualifier for those that are eligible for the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship. This year’s qualifiers were Greg Edwards of East Lake Golf Club, Hunter Suggs of Cherokee Town & Country Club, Chad Thomas of West Pines Golf Club, and William Epting, PGA of Champions Retreat. Those four players will head to Port St. Lucie, FL on November 16-19 at PGA Golf Club to compete in the National tournament.

After the second round concluded, there was a two-hole playoff to determine the last two qualifiers and the 1st & 2nd alternates. Thomas stuck it to a foot for a tap in birdie on the par-4, 18th hole to secure the 3rd qualifying spot while Epting and Justin Mattheis of Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee made a pair of pars to extend the playoff. The 2nd alternate spot was secured by Thomas Farrell of Savannah Golf Club with a bogey. On the second playoff hole, Epting defeated Mattheis for the final qualifying spot and Mattheis earned 1st alternate.
